This is our second week in our new series Burger Wars. This stop: the newly opened Umami Burger in Old Town Pasadena.
Burger places seem to be the upcoming rage (again). Pasadena hosts every style of fantastic burger from In N Out and small burger joints to the fancy foodie Umamai Burger with everything in between. Here at Pasadena Pilot we have decided to dedicate a new series to exploring the best burgers in town.
Stop 2: Umami Burger
Umami: umai·mi : a taste sensation that is meaty or savory and is produced by several amino acids and nucleotides (as glutamate and aspartate). Japanese, savoriness, flavor First known use in 1979
This is not your mom’s burger place. Unless, your mom is a super cool foodie who is into exploring umami based topping on her burger Perhaps a Westside mom or Northern California mom, but if you’re in Pasadena this week for the Rose Parade® and Rose Bowl® 2013 and you’re from Wisconsin with the kids- check the menu closely before heading into Umami Burger.
If, on the other hand, you are into a higher end burger loaded with mouth watering dream building umami toppings, then put your name on the list immediately. The burgers are heaven. Pure heaven. Melt in your mouth pillows of joy. While the burgers at Umami are called “Classic Burgers” they are far from the type that you find at the local burger joint, such as the namesake “umami burger” which comes with shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, a parmesan crisp and umami ketchup. It’s truly a transcendent burger experience.
The shoestring fries are light and delicate dipped in umami ketchup. Split an order with some friends. Or go for it all on your own. You earned it.
Great beer and wine list to create a perfect balance to your meal.
The one issue with the Pasadena Umami location is the large and blank space (while elegant and minimal) creates a sound vortex. It’s loud in there. Really loud when it’s crowded.
